00:00:00: Living at eye level with the Schwebebahn is of course something completely unique. Nevertheless, the residents living alongside this stretch didn’t always have an easy time over the decades. The monorail carriages used to make quite a din – and passed by every few minutes.

00:00:16: New sound-damping rails have eliminated this problem. The “floating railway” is now living up to its name – which is what its neighbours feel, too. Just listen:

00:00:27: “I’ve lived here on the second floor for 40 years. The monorail passes right by my window but I really don’t notice it any more. The new track has made it much quieter than it used to be.

00:00:40: But this also has its disadvantages. You used to be able to predict the weather just by listening to the monorail’s squealing. Whenever it was particularly loud, we knew it was going to rain! Nowadays I have to listen to the weather forecast...”
